Maryland Pro Rodeo hosted a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo in May 2022. The Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association (PRCA) sanctions hundreds of rodeos and organizes finals each year in December.
You can see Battle of the Beast performances organized by J Bar W Ranch from June through September. One of the performances is at the Maryland State Fair. At that performance, you can see bull riding and barrel racing.
J Bar W Ranch also hosts Wednesday Night Open Barrels & Jackpot competitions. These events run May through July.
The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo honors Bill Pickett’s legacy and modern black cowboys and cowgirls. Bill Pickett was the most famous black rodeo performer and the first black cowboy movie star. He invented bull dogging, also known as steer wrestling.
The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo is part of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) Legacy Series. This series hosts events in Tennessee, California, Georgia and the DC/Virginia/Maryland area. At these events you’ll see bull riding, bull dogging, calf roping, breakaway roping, barrel racing, and steer undecorating.
The Bill Pickett Rodeo also organizes the Texas Connection Series.
The Maryland High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA) teaches and supports rodeo athletics among high schoolers.
