Whether you’re going to enjoy scenic byways or explore the outdoors, Nebraska offers a lot to enjoy that is characteristic of the Midwest.
You can see some of the best of agriculture and raising animals. And, you can get a taste of small town life. Adding a rodeo to your itinerary is a great way to get the most of your Nebraska experience.
Dating back to 1921, Nebraska’s Big Rodeo continues to celebrate the Burwell community and its Western heritage. You can see many types of performances at this July rodeo. A few that stand out are the Indian Relay Races, Wild Horse Race, and Dinner Bell Derby (where unweaned colts race to their mothers).
You can watch the Little Rodeo where kids compete in various events by age group – sheep riding, calf scramble, calf riding, steer riding, and more.
There’s still plenty of fun outside of the rodeo, too. Nebraska’s Big Rodeo is held with the Garfield County Fair, so you can enjoy all that the fair has to offer. You can enjoy live music and dancing at the Bull Pen Beer Garden or shopping at the Midway.
Nebraska’s Big Rodeo also organizes the Nebraska State High School Rodeo Finals in June.
Rodeo Grand Island occurs in February. It’s a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo. The Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) sanctions rodeos throughout the United States and organizes finals each year.
You can see bull riding, broncs, and barrel racing. Rodeo Grand Island also organizes thoroughbred horse racing.
Another great Nebraska rodeo is NEBRASKAland Days. It’s also a PRCA rodeo.
It’s hosted at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. In addition to watching rodeo performances, you’ll enjoy country concerts, a parade, and more.
If you’re heading to Nebraska in June, check out NEBRASKAland Days.
Nebraska has several rodeo associations that support rodeos throughout the state. The Nebraska State Rodeo Association (NSRA) was founded in 1954.
Universities also support students competing in rodeos. For example, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a college rodeo program that includes the University of Nebraska Rodeo Association (UNRA) Club and the UNL Rodeo team.
